One better thing about installing solar panels for home is that many local and federal programs provide grants and low interest loans to homeowners to offset the cost of these solar panel systems. You should make sure that you look into any of these programs available and find out if you qualify.
References :
http://www.getsolar4less.com/

You misunderstand how a solar cell works. It does not absorb the sun's energy, at least, not in the way you mean. It does not store the energy; it is converted directly from sunlight to electric current. It cannot store anything. This is one of the problems with solar power; it works when the sun shines, but there is no way (internally) to store the energy for later use. That requires rechargeable batteries. Power is lost in both charging and discharging the batteries. Photosynthesis stores the energy chemically, so that it is available for later use by the plant.
References :
no, the cells work through the photoelectric effect, they take a photon and release an electron, thanks to the fact they are arranged in a semi-conductor crystal they don't shortcut and release the electrons smoothly as demanded so they can charge batteries.
in photosynthesis the chlorophyll absorbs light and changes from an oxidized to a reduced form
and the goes to an oxidized form again but turning an ADP (low energy) into an ATP (high energy form)
in between involving the homolitic rupture of a water molecule, here too life is more complicated
References :
Solar panels use the Sun's energy to create electrical energy, which people use to power their homes and other devices. Plants use the Sun's energy to create chemical energy, which they store and use to stay alive and grow. When a person or animal eats the plant and digests it, they get the chemical energy and use it to stay alive and grow.

That's overly simplified, but it's basically it, I think.

Cheers!
References :
A 280 watt TV doesn't cost 40 bucks a month to run. You're doing your math wrong or you have the most expensive electricity I've heard of. It would cost you thousands to set up a solar system like that.

You want to save money? Get rid of the cable or satellite provider! That's got to be at least $100/month!
References :
Mitsubishi Master Tech

If your power costs 20 cents per kWh, then that means the TV consumes 40/0.2 = 800 kWh per month. That would mean that the TV is on for 2400 hours a month, which can't be right, as there are only about 720 hours in a month. Maybe your electricity costs more, but even with the TV on 24/7, this doesn't make sense.

That suggests to me that you're blaming the wrong thing - look for some other thing in your house hogging a lot of power. You can buy a thing called a Kill-a-Watt meter to monitor how much an individual appliance is using. Or, the cowboy way is to just go to your service panel, flip breakers on and off one at a time, and see which one makes your electric meter slow down and speed up. Then find out what is on that circuit.

I'm a big fan of solar, but don't want to see you waste your money when the problem can be solved by other means. Solar is great in the right location, but only after the house itself is made as efficient as possible first.
