I have an idea that would save a ton of energy:

Roof tiles made of solar power panels. Just have to make them durable enough.

Link them all together and to your power box. Any extra you sell to the grid.

Imagine. Every new construction house with a roof made of solar panels!

I want to buy one for my house and some have given the solar powered ones a thumb down, but that’s all I really want.

Anyone have one and how have they worked, worth the price? Have you had a tile roof? I asked this elsewhere and someone told me that it was stupid that I have ceiling fans in all my upstairs rooms because the don’t help at all. I was aghast.
Attic fan. I was trying to justfy asking the question again by showing that one of the two reponses I got told me I was dumb for having ceiling fans, I want to add an attic fan to help using the air as little as possible.

One story,2300sf.stucco with tile roof home in Phoenix AZ.
Gabled vents on East & West. R 30 fiberglass pads of insulation in attic.2 Fans installed $1100.00

Your saying attic fans, Are you talking about exaust fans?
In a house your size those fans should probably run starting about 1- 1 1/2 hours before the air is turned on. You may want to put them on a timer. If it’s really hot and the air runs 24/7 then they should be on too. If you talking about an attic fan that pulls hot air from the interior of the house then the same 1- 1 1/2 hours before the air is turned on but once it is stop the fans or it will suck your cooled air into the attic.

life sized? and how much does it cost?
also, solar panels?
and tiles for a roof?

There,s a standard code for woods specially when you build house .Department of building safety require is minimum of # 2 quality of Douglas fair which is cheapest lumber in market .
One 2x4x12 is about $13.00.
For solar panel installation will cast a lot and you must go by the best product in market in this case.
and for roof architectural shingle or three taps.

I’m all for alternative energies like wind power and solar power, but what will happen now that we have twisted nature to unexpected extremes?

One October day this year we woke up to the effects of a freak hail storm that pelted over 2000 cars breaking windows, snapping off rear-view mirrors and denting any metalwork it landed on, damaged plastic awnings, roof tiles and anything that couldn’t withstand the impact. It even left golf ball sized marks on the sidewalks, cleaner than the rest of the area.

can solar panels be fitted on such a construction , i have a lovely southerly elevation , perfect .

Uhh….Solar panels can be mounted on pretty much anything solid in structure. Usually when mounted to a roof, as long as the material covering the roof (shingles, tiles, tar, whatever) won’t be compromised, mounting to a roof entails attaching to the roof’s structure, or trusses so they don’t fly away.
Maybe you can expand on your roof’s composite material? Are you saying that you have ‘lightweight’ tiles? What are those? Are you talking about spanish tiles? I don’t think spanish tiles are easy to drill through and not highly recommended for solar panels. You could ground-mount them though!
I would find someone in your area that supplies and installs them, they should give you a free estimate and tell you if you can mount them on your roof.

I would like a really nice solar system but mounting the panels on some bulky framework is a pain in the neck. They have to remove the tiles and put them back up.
I have investigated solar tiles (low voltage output). Any suggestions?

I have successfully installed solar panels on a concrete tile roof using only stainless steel or galvanised wire to secure the panels to the wooden rafters under the tiles.

How does roof replacement work for a 20 year roof? I’ve seen many panels installed in Europe, but only on homes with ceramic tiles on their roofs.

Asphalt shingle is probably the easiest surface over which to install solar panels, because it is flat, and can be done without special hardware if desired.

If this is a water heating panel, be sure that the underlying rafters are strong enough to support it.

Tile brackets are available but they won’t fit under slate and I don’t really wanna drill holes, any ideas ?.

Use a rail system, that attaches under the eaves to the wood or masonry of the house, and simply attaches of the the ridge line of the roof. Careful consideration of total load weight, since you already have slate.

Can you ground mount your panels,,,, much easier.

We are having our tiled roof replaced with iron, but we have a new solar panel (for our split system hot water service) on there. I rang the company that installed it and asked them to remove it before and replace it after the job. The person wasn’t interested in coming out, and told me it was very simple and when the time came he wanted my husband to call him. He also said doing it ourselves wouldn’t affect our warranty. Now the roofers say the angle of the pipes will be different due to the different roof covering and they’ll need re welding. They don’t want to touch it either. I think everyone just doesn’t wnat it to be their problem. Any ideas?

the roofer is correct. there will be different angles to deal with. you will have to find someone to re-install the unit.
